Homemade Bread

This classic homemade bread is soft, fluffy, and perfect for sandwiches or toast, made with simple ingredients for a wholesome, fresh loaf every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water and sprinkle yeast on top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Mix until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan.
  6. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

For a crustier loaf, place a pan of water in the oven during baking to create steam. This bread pairs wonderfully with fresh butter or your favorite jam.
