Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup orzo pasta
  • 2 cups fresh broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook orzo pasta according to package instructions until al dente; drain and set aside.
  3. Steam broccoli florets until tender but still crisp, about 4-5 minutes; drain.
  4. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
  5. Gradually whisk in milk, cooking until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  6. Remove sauce from heat and stir in cheddar cheese, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until cheese is melted and smooth.
  7. Combine cooked orzo, broccoli, and cheese sauce in a baking dish; mix well.
  8. Top with Parmesan cheese and bread crumbs, if using.
  9. Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.
  10. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For added protein, stir in cooked diced chicken before baking or sprinkle extra cheese on top for a cheesier crust.
