These Basketball Sugar Cookies are soft, buttery, and decorated with vibrant royal icing to resemble classic basketballs – perfect for game day or sports-themed parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1½ cups white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Orange royal icing
  • Black royal icing

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using).
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients until fully incorporated.
  6. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Flatten slightly with your palm.
  7. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Let cookies cool completely on wire racks.
  8. Once cooled, pipe orange royal icing to cover the cookie surface and let it dry.
  9. Using black royal icing, pipe basketball lines to create the classic design. Allow icing to set before serving or storing.

Notes

For a smoother icing finish, flood the cookies with royal icing and allow it to fully dry before adding the basketball lines. These cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to one week.
